Volunteer Opportunities

A variety of opportunities are listed below, but your opportunities are not limited to just those listed below. Some opportunities are once per year while others are ongoing. There is usually much more information available than we can post here. Use the contact information to get more details.

Anyone wishing to post information about volunteering may contact one of our Silver Cord Coordinators:  Will Dotson (ACHS) or Lamont Muhammad (AHS) via email.

You will receive your Silver Cord at Senior Spotlight Night.  If you are unable to attend you will then receive your Silver Cord during graduation practice.

Volunteer Opportunities

Des Moines Botanical Garden - Friday evenings through Feb. 9

Dome After Dark, Friday evenings through February, 6- 9: Friday evenings allow guests to relax in a beautiful environment and enjoy the winter light display in the conservatory and Gardeners Show House. Trellis is open as well. Help is needed for the following roles:

  • Admission Desk & Garden Shop: Help guests with admission and Garden Shop sales. Training is provided. Other daytime and weekend shifts are available for those who are interested. This role is great for those who like to help others. It provides the opportunity to help guests get off to a great start with their visit, share information about the Botanical Garden and help with purchases. Scheduling is flexible for weekend shifts but should be often enough to retain skills for the role. Those who would like to learn more about this position are welcome to schedule a time to shadow prior to training.   • Dome After Dark – Hospitality:  Volunteers provide assistance to event staff, help as needed during the event and walk through the event areas looking for debris that might be left about or concerns with any lights or the train display.

Heritage Carnival - Feb. 18

Need volunteers to set up carnival games in classrooms, run classroom games as students/parents come in to play, pass out food, work prize room, or clean up at nights end.

Date: Feb. 18
Hours: 4:30 – 8:30 (this is to help with set up and or clean up as the actual event is 5:30-8).

ACHS Girls JV Basketball Scorekeeper-through Feb. 8

The girls JV basketball team is looking for volunteers to keep stats and fill out the scorebook during the 2021-22 season. Please let assistant AD Ian Smith or Coach Andy Fehn know if you are available for the following dates.

Drake Basketball Concession

Volunteer work includes taking inventory at the beginning and end of the event, cashier, back worker (getting food for the cashier) sweeping and stocking food items.  Start two hours before the game, one hour to get everything counted and set up, then we open the concession stand one hour before the game starts.  Start time on the sign up is the time we should be leaving Ankeny and the end time is an estimate of when we would return.  We close the stand when there is 7 minutes left in the game, then have to inventory and clean.

ALS Association Iowa Chapter-Friday/Saturday in March

Event – Packet Pick Up for St. Paddy’s Marathon/Half Marathon/5K
Date – Friday, March 18
Time – 10:15am – 6:30pm (shifts can be split as long as we have a volunteer to cover the other half)
Location – Fleet Feet, 521 E Locust Street, Des Moines, IA 50309

Details – Volunteers are responsible for looking up participants name on a list, selecting the correct bib number and giving them the correct shirt size. Part of the proceeds from the event will go to The ALS Association! Event – St. Paddy’s Marathon/Half Marathon/5K
Date – Saturday, March 19
Time – 6:45am – 12:30pm
Location – Downtown Des Moines (Intersection of E Locust Street and E 7th Street…just west of State Capitol)

Details – Volunteers are needed for various tasks to help the event run smoothly, such as: Registration Assistant, Course Marshal, Water Station, Medals, and more! Volunteers will more than likely work more than one job throughout the event. Part of the proceeds from the event will go to The ALS Association! Date – Friday, March 25
Time – Depends on activity, but most volunteer activities occur between 3:00-9:00 pm
Location – Wells Fargo Arena, 233 Center Street, Des Moines, IA 50309
Details – Volunteers can choose between 3 activities (Seat Tags, Puck Sales and Raffle Ticket Sales)
Attire – Casual and a volunteer shirt will be provided to you
Age Requirement – Volunteers must be 16 or older to volunteer OR accompanied by an adult.

Ronald McDonald House Charities

The Des Moines Ronald McDonald House is committed to improving the quality of life for children and their families through a variety of solutions. Hundreds of volunteers who share our concerns provide thousands of donated hours per year to help us achieve our goals.

Childcare for Heritage PTO Meetings-through May 9

Jessica Johnson will be offering childcare for toddler-school age children for parents attending Heritage Elementary PTO meetings. Care will take place in the gym adjacent to the cafeteria where the meetings will take place. Heritage Elementary is at 301 SW Prairie Trail Pkwy (Near DMACC).

Candeo - Serving Individuals with disabilities

Candeo is a non-profit organization with flexible options where students can choose their level of engagement with our clients. Many of our clients are looking for someone to hang out with or a mentor who will commit to seeing them. Volunteer opportunities may include playing board games, cooking, book reading or assisting with yard work around our clients home. This opportunity is in alignment with Candeo’s mission, to inspire individuals in service to achieve their personal goals. AHS Peer Tutoring

This volunteer opportunity would be providing tutoring to peers at AHS. Students will be paired with a student in the academic area of their choice. Students that apply should be passing all of their classes.

Project Silence No More Internship

Project Silence No More is looking for high school juniors and seniors interested in mental health awareness to help expand our initiatives in their communities. Some of these initiatives include funding suicide prevention training, sharing resources via social media, giving scholarships, and hosting our annual mental health awareness concert. Past internship projects have included:

  • Researching resources and training programs
  • Writing press releases for our major announcements
  • Designing/posting informational social media content
  • Overall planning of our annual concert
  • & so much more!
