You will receive your Silver Cord at Senior Spotlight Night. If you are unable to attend you will then receive your Silver Cord during graduation practice.
Hawk Highlight Awards
We would like volunteers from AHS to assist in making Hawk Highlight Awards. Time will count toward Silver Cord hours. Please email Mr. Lehman to sign up.
Mid-Iowa Band Competition Cleanup - Sunday, Oct. 17
The Ankeny and Centennial marching bands are hosting the Mid-Iowa band competition on Sat. Oct. 16th at the Northview football stadium and we need volunteers to help clean-up the following morning, Sun. Oct. 17th. We need 10-12 people for approx. 2 hours, to pick-up debris, sweep and use a leaf blower to clean the seating areas. It’s really easy to do and we will provide all of the necessary tools. Polk County Conservation Events- Sept. 25 & Oct. 9
Saturday, September 25, National Public Lands Day
- Location: Easter Lake Park Beach
- Time: 1PM – 4 Pm
- Volunteer Activity: Trail resurfacing, garden maintenance, litter cleanup, seed harvest
- Extras: 4PM – 5 PM Meal provided & 5PM – 7PM Free kayak, canoe, paddle board rentals
- Limited space, must sign up. This is a public event.
- National Public Lands Day is the nation’s largest single-day volunteer event for public lands. This celebration welcomes thousands of volunteers to help restore and improve public lands around the country. The theme for 2021 is “More Ways to Connect to Nature”. We invite you to join staff in a park beautification project before we gather for a later afternoon of fun, food, and opportunities to connect you to the recreational amenities at Easter Lake Park.

Jag/Hawk 5K Run - Sept. 25
We are looking for volunteers to help with our Annual Jag/Hawk 5k Run. Volunteers will be placed at certain spots along the run to help guide runners. We are also look for 2 “push” runners. They would follow the last of the runners/walkers. Pickup any signs they may have been missed along the route. When they cross the line we know all runners have finished the race.

We need volunteers! Starting at 6am on walk day and going till 2pm, we will need volunteers to help with set-up, clean-up, registration, water stops, Promise Garden and so much more. Can Play Sports - Sept 13-Oct 25
For our Opportunity programs we have volleyball on Mondays starting Sept. 13 through Oct. 25 at Cornell Elementary school from 5:30-7:00. Our Opportunity programs are with children who live in low income households
For our Courage programs we have football/soccer/cheerleading on Mondays starting Sept. 13 through Oct. 4 at Ankeny Miracle League Field from 4:30-6:00. As well as football/soccer on Saturdays starting Sept. 18 through Oct. 9 at Ankeny Miracle League Field from 8:30-10:00. Our Courage programs involve children with disabilities.
We like to have our volunteers arrive 30 minutes before programming starts. Also as of right now, we require volunteers to wear a mask during all of our indoor programs. Masks are optional for outdoor programming.
Ronald McDonald House Charities - Family Service Learner
Stipend: Unpaid Service Learning
Dates of Position: 2 month minimum- 6 month maximum

Assist House Manager and Volunteer Coordinator in day to day tasks for the organization.

Childcare for Heritage PTO Meetings
Jessica Johnson will be offering childcare for toddler-school age children for parents attending Heritage Elementary PTO meetings. Care will take place in the gym adjacent to the cafeteria where the meetings will take place. Heritage Elementary is at 301 SW Prairie Trail Pkwy (Near DMACC).

Concession Stand - Jaguar Football
The Ankeny Jaguar football committee is looking for assistance with staffing the concessions stand for upcoming football games. If you are interested in assisting, please visit any of the sign up links below.
*Please note that we do not need volunteers for the September 3rd Ankeny Hawks vs Ankeny Centennial Jaguars Varsity football game. Also, there will be two concession stands open for the September 10th Varsity game against Waukee, so we will need extra volunteers for that game.

If students are interested in working another slot outside their activities they can sign up for Silver Cord hours and have Mike Bakker, AD Director at Southview, sign off on the Silver Cord Hours. The Football Concessions is managed by the Ankeny Hawk Football Team on behalf of the Ankeny Booster Club.
Reggie's (Virtual) Sleepout - Sept. 24-Oct 3
We have in-person volunteer opportunities for students to help with a meal or sorting donations at our center and learn more about Reggie’s Sleepout. Reggie’s Sleepout is a virtual hybrid event that asks participants to fundraise and sleepout in their own backyards to raise awareness and funds to support homeless youth here in Des Moines. This year’s event will run from Sept. 24 to Oct. 3.
Des Moines Hungry Turkey Half Marathon & 5K - Nov. 27
Event – Des Moines Hungry Turkey Half Marathon & 5K
Date – Saturday, November 27th
Time – 7-11:30 am
Location – Downtown Des Moines (Intersection of E 1st Street and E Court Avenue)
Details – Volunteers are needed for various tasks to help the event run smoothly, such as: Registration Assistant, Post-Race/Registration Food, Course Marshal, Water Station, Medals, and more! Volunteers will more than likely work more than one job throughout the event. Candeo - Serving Individuals with disabilities
Candeo is a non-profit organization with flexible options where students can choose their level of engagement with our clients. Many of our clients are looking for someone to hang out with or a mentor who will commit to seeing them. Volunteer opportunities may include playing board games, cooking, book reading or assisting with yard work around our clients home. This opportunity is in alignment with Candeo’s mission, to inspire individuals in service to achieve their personal goals. Please contact Gerald Cofie to volunteer. .
AHS Peer Tutoring
This volunteer opportunity would be providing tutoring to peers at AHS. Students will be paired with a student in the academic area of their choice. Students that apply should be passing all of their classes.

HART-Harvesting for the Arts
HART Harvesting for the Arts is a central Iowa nonprofit organization that combines agriculture and support of the arts to benefit the community. We grow fresh produce to give to the community for a suggested donation. These funds are then utilized as scholarships for arts opportunities for students in need. We will be accepting volunteers within the months of June- August. Students will be doing the following tasks to volunteer for HART:
- Helping to weed the garden (this task will be done weekly)
- Helping to water the garden (this task will be done every couple of days)
- Helping to harvest all produce in late August to early October
These tasks will be done outdoors. If a student has any allergies or medical conditions which these tasks will affect, HART will take that into consideration and look for other jobs of which they can complete. These would include helping to deliver produce/ products to customers in the community. Project Silence No More Internship
Project Silence No More is looking for high school juniors and seniors interested in mental health awareness to help expand our initiatives in their communities. Some of these initiatives include funding suicide prevention training, sharing resources via social media, giving scholarships, and hosting our annual mental health awareness concert. Past internship projects have included:
- Researching resources and training programs
- Writing press releases for our major announcements
- Designing/posting informational social media content
- Overall planning of our annual concert
- & so much more!
